Abstract
The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital workflows is revolutionizing individualized orthodontics, altering the paradigm for treatment planning and delivery. Traditional orthodontic therapy, based on manual impressions and mechanical devices, was often inaccurate and inefficient for individualized care. Emerging innovations of AI and digital solutions—intraoral scanning, three-dimensional (3D) printing, and teledentistry—have enabled the use of rich patient information to create individualized treatment plans, building on genetic, clinical, and lifestyle data. These innovations have enabled improved diagnostic accuracy, reduced treatment times, enhanced compliance, and enhanced operational efficiency, with studies proving significant enhancements to patient satisfaction and cost savings. AI-based teledentistry and remote monitoring have also extended care to underserved populations, and digital workflows have optimized appliance production and practice management. Challenges remain, though, with data confidentiality, the cost of implementation, the need for clinical validation, and ongoing training. Addressing these challenges is necessary to ensure widespread and sustainable implementation of AI-based, patient-focused orthodontic care. This review synthesizes the current literature, industry publications, and technology reports to provide a comprehensive overview of the clinical, operational, and ethical implications of this paradigm shift to orthodontics.
