This study determines how food safety awareness shapes cancer prevention behaviors, revealing critical gaps in knowledge-action among Dhaka residents.
Abstract
This study explores how public awareness of food safety influences cancer prevention behaviour in Dhaka, Bangladesh. With rising food contamination from pesticides, heavy metals, and chemical additives, the public faces serious health risks, including cancer. Using a structured survey of 400 residents from Dhaka North and South, the study finds that while people are moderately aware of basic food safety practices, significant gaps remain especially among less educated and lower-income groups. A positive link was found between food safety knowledge and preventive behaviours, but knowledge alone didn’t always translate into action. Public health campaigns have increased awareness but lack the practical impact needed to drive long-term behaviours change. The findings highlight the importance of targeted, practical education and stronger public health strategies that empower individuals to make safer food choices. Bridging the gap between awareness and action is essential for reducing cancer risks tied to unsafe food in Bangladesh.
