Abstract

There is a persistent temptation — understandable, if ultimately misleading — to split John Milton into two figures: the orthodox Puritan and the proto-liberal secularist. This review pushes back against that split, or at least complicates it considerably. Drawing on scholarship published mostly between 2000 and 2025, alongside close reading of Areopagitica, The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes, the paper traces four recurring threads in the literature. Milton's Arian, Arminian theology, it turns out, reshapes biblical typology around human choice rather than predestined outcome. His republicanism defines freedom not simply as an absence of restraint but as the opposite of slavery — a distinction that matters more than it might first appear. His toleration, meanwhile, is genuine but not unconditional; Roman Catholicism sits firmly outside it, excluded on grounds of state security. And his poetics, somewhat surprisingly given his otherwise patriarchal public voice, borrow a feminized posture of prophetic receptivity. Taken together, these threads suggest something that neither the nationalist nor the secularist reading quite captures: Milton's civil and domestic liberties were never free-standing commitments. They were derivations — theological ones — of his conception of conscience. That reframing, modest as it sounds, has real consequences for how his legacy gets read, taught, and cited going forward.

Keywords: John Milton; political theology; religious toleration; Arminianism; Paradise Lost
